Stop Race-Based Hate grew out of a desire from a trio of friends to DO SOMETHING about racism and hate crimes against people of colour.

Our volunteer group initially formed in 2021 as Stop Asian Hate Alberta after the horrifying Atlanta spa shooting which saw the death of eight people including six Asian women.

We felt compelled to do and say something, we needed to.

As all of our day-to-day work touches the culinary industry, we ended up coordinating an anti-hate message of solidarity among Alberta culinary professionals.

As hate incidents grew, and attacks became more brazen, we teamed up with Edmonton taekwondo studio Elite TKD to offer free virtual self defence classes to those who felt at risk, as well as allies.

Something we kept hearing when sharing about anti-racism is how many people weren’t sure how to properly articulate why something is racist, or would feel more confident speaking out against racist remarks if they felt they had the right information and words to share.

Our mission evolved from anti-Asian racism initiatives to anti-hate, anti-racism work as a whole—as race-based hate affects us all.

This was the idea that sparked the creation of the Stop Race-Based Hate tool.

We are not anti-racist experts. We are community members trying to help create a more anti-racist community.

As part of the development of this tool, we leaned on existing anti-racism resources as well as we consulted with organizations currently doing important work in the anti-racism space, as well as organizations whose communities may be most affected by racism, including:

We are committed to having ongoing conversations with organizations, individuals and community members to ensure the information on this website is relevant and meaningful.

We believe speaking out against racism works toward eliminating racism, and our intent is to help people feel confident enough to speak out, and comfortable enough to have difficult conversations with friends, family, followers, and others in their lives who may be intentionally or unintentionally sharing racist views.

This website will house a number of racist statements and scenarios, as well as information people can use to respond, including a critical response template that could be applied to other scenarios not explicitly listed on the site. This website will also eventually house mental health and self care tips, and other ongoing resources so we can all help end racism. Eventually, we would like to see the tool used by community partners in their anti-racist work and have the link be shared and accessed from anyone wanting to provide anti-racist education.

If our group organizes anti-racist education events, workshops, or for example, more self-defence classes, we would also house that information here.

Silence is violence and complacency is part of the problem. If we do not address race-based hate, it signals that those views are okay. Helping people of colour and allies be more confident in speaking out against racism is just one tangible action we can take to protect ourselves, become a better ally to support those who may need help.

We hope this initiative provides a useful resource that makes it easy to educate yourself and respond to those in your life, who may be faced with or say a racist comment. It is an ongoing resource.

Our long-term objectives include adding more statements and scenarios specific to different communities that face racism including addressing Indigenous and Black racism, anti-semitism, Asian hate, and Islamophobia, host anti-racist events and workshops, provide mental health resources for those dealing with racism and integrate the tool with existing organizations to integrate the tool within the work they’re doing to support racialized communities.

We’re also immensely grateful to digital marketing agency Kick Point for teaming up with us to turn our anti-racist education idea into reality. Their generous support on this project—as well as many other tangible actions they’ve taken to support Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour business owners over the years—is a reflection of their allyship and commitment to building a more anti-racist community.
