Anti-Racist Education

About

Stop Race Based Hate is an anti-racism resource designed to build a more anti-racist community.

Being actively committed to eliminating racism requires a conscious decision to learn, unlearn, and take action every day.

Speaking out against racism works towards eliminating racism.

This tool is meant to be an educational, empowering and accessible anti-racist resource that helps people find the words to speak out against racism.

Stop Race Based Hate is meant to:

  • Help you feel confident enough to speak out and articulate why a statement is racist
  • Help you feel comfortable enough to have difficult, anti-racist conversations with friends, family, followers, and others in your life who may be intentionally or unintentionally sharing racist views
  • Reinforce that education and a willingness to speak out against racist statements can increase anti-racist awareness, hold others accountable for their views and work to change their racist views, while reducing racism in the community

To bring about change, you must not be afraid to take the first step. We will fail when we fail to try.

– Rosa Parks

About the Tool

Being faced with racist viewpoints can be jarring, awkward, and raise different emotions, especially if you’re caught off guard. Fight, flight, or freeze instincts may kick in making it tough to respond, address, or articulate your perspective.

Many articles, blogs, and social media posts address statements or scenarios that pop up at different times when racist events occur. This website is intended to house content and advice in one space to help anyone address racism and not-so micro-aggressions (there’s nothing micro about racist aggressions) they may face day-to-day.

If you don’t know how to respond to a racist statement said to or around you, you won’t and that racist view will perpetuate. If you know how to confidently articulate against a racist statement, you signal to the person who shared that statement, that their racism won’t be tolerated.

Educating and empowering more people to speak out against racism creates a space where those with racist views do not feel comfortable in sharing their views. It creates a space that holds racists accountable, and may eventually change the opinions of racists as well.

This tool was developed using existing anti-racism resources along with input from organizations currently doing important work in the anti-racism space, and organizations whose communities may be most affected by racism.

It is an ongoing resource. Our long-term objectives include adding more statements and scenarios specific to different communities that face racism including addressing Indigenous and Black racism, anti-semitism, Asian hate, and Islamophobia, host anti-racist events and workshops, provide mental health resources for those dealing with racism and integrate the tool with existing organizations to integrate the tool within the work they’re doing to support racialized communities.

About the Team

Stop Race Based Hate is an entirely volunteer, anti-racism initiative created by three Alberta-based women, with generous support from digital marketing agency Kick Point.

We are not anti-racist experts. We want to be clear about that.

We are community members and women of colour who have experienced racism, and became alarmed and disgusted over the subtle and overt racism and hate crimes Indigenous, Black and People of Colour are experiencing. We felt compelled to act. Through this initiative, we are trying to contribute to a more anti-racist community.

We are committed to ongoing anti-racism efforts, and working with organizations, individuals and community members in the anti-racism space, to ensure the information on this website is relevant and meaningful.

How it began

Our group initially formed in 2021 as Stop Asian Hate Alberta after the horrifying Atlanta spa shooting which saw the death of eight people including six Asian women. We felt compelled to do and say something, we needed to. As all of our day-to-day work touches the culinary industry, we ended up coordinating an anti-hate message of solidarity among Alberta culinary professionals.

As hate incidents grew, and attacks became more brazen, we teamed up with Edmonton taekwondo studio Elite TKD to offer free virtual self defence classes to those who felt at risk, as well as allies.

Our mission evolved from anti-Asian racism initiatives to anti-hate, anti-racism as a whole—as race-based hate affects us all.

Something we kept hearing when sharing about anti-racism is how many people weren’t sure how to properly articulate why something is racist, or would feel more confident speaking out against racist remarks if they felt they had the right information and words to share. This was the idea that sparked the creation of the Stop Race-Based Hate tool.

We are committed to learning, unlearning, and making efforts each day to be anti-racist allies.
